Martin® Introduces Brush Cleaner
Published: December 17th 2012
[Neponset, IL] − A new powered brush cleaner for conveyor belt applications has been introduced by Martin Engineering, a rotating design that removes material accumulation and dust in difficult applications. Well suited to belts that use raised elements (cleats, chevrons, ribs or lugs) to assist in carrying material, the Martin® Brush Cleaner is an economical solution that provides high-performance, energy-efficient operation, even in conditions involving sticky materials or stringy fibers, such as coal and biomass.
The economical 230/460-volt, 3-phase electric motor provides successful cleaning with minimal power consumption. A 1 HP motor powers the units for 18-42 inch belts, and a 2 HP motor drives the cleaners for 48-96 inch belts. The motor can be operated in either direction, and the unit can be installed on the left or right side of the cleaner, depending on the plant’s requirements. Constructed of durable steel and stainless steel components, the cost-effective belt cleaner delivers a long-service life, holding up even in the harshest operating environments. The innovative design allows easy installation and maintenance.
Two bristle pattern options are available to accommodate materials with a range of moisture contents. For both models, standard polypropylene bristles offer an operating temperature range of -20ºF to 180ºF (-29ºC to 82ºC), and optional bristles are available for higher temperatures.
The Martin® Spiral Brush Cleaner contains bristles that are wrapped in a spiral pattern, effectively cleaning dry materials that can cling and cause buildup on the shaft of conventional brush cleaners. The standard .038" (0.96 mm) diameter bristles are 4" (102 mm) long. Developed for belts carrying dusty or crumbled materials that readily release from bristles, the spiral design is also available in low-profile versions and wider constructions for especially challenging applications.
For soft or moist materials that tend to cling to bristles and brush shafts, the Martin® Strip Brush Belt Cleaner is a 10-inch diameter unit that employs a series of brush strips on shaft-mounted hubs. The strip design allows material to fall from the brush, where it can be collected and returned to the material flow, rather than settling into the bottom of the bristles. Bristles are .040" (1 mm) in diameter and 3" (76 mm) long.
Martin Engineering's Conveyor Belt Brush Cleaners are designed for use in the secondary cleaning position, with recommended placement at the point where the belt leaves the discharge pulley. The cleaners may also be mounted further along the conveyor's return run, where they can be supported by an idler or pulley. Installation of a primary on the face of the discharge pulley below the material stream is always recommended.
